INFLUENZA

Flu season is starting to peak throughout the community's in Western Colorado. Influenza begins abruptly with fever, chills, and body aches. It is also characterized by a dry hacking cough, sore throat, and watery eyes. Although influenza is a repertory infection, the whole body can be affected. On average, people who get the flu spend 2 days in bed and have another 4 days of restricted activity, including time away from work or school. Most people recover in 1 to 2 weeks.

It is not too late to get immunized against the flu. Contact your local
health department or doctor’s office to receive your flu shot/mist.
Children over 6 months of age are eligible for the flu vaccine. Contact Western Colorado 211 to find the health department in your area.

Good Health Habits to follow:
          Avoid close contact-Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
When you are sick, keep your distance from others to protect them from getting sick too.

          Stay home when you are sick-If possible, stay home from work, school,
and errands when you are sick. You will help prevent others from catching your illness.

          Cover your mouth & nose-Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when
coughing or sneezing. It may prevent others around you from getting sick.

          Clean your hands-Washing your hands often will help protect you from germs.

          Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth-Germs are often spread
when a person touches something that is contaminated
with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose or mouth.

          Practice other good health habits-Get plenty of sleep, be physically active,
manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food.
